Lawyers storm Ilorin for Buhari

Lawyers in their hundreds stormed the major streets of Ilorin Kwara state capital yesterday morning to drum support for the presidential ticket of General Muhammadu Buhari and Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN of the All Progressives Congress in the February 14 elections.
The lawyers under the aegis of Lawyers for Change in a long convoy of cars, with banners, and posters went round the town explaining to the residents, in the markets, shops, offices and on the streets the benefits accrued to Nigeria from the ticket of Muhammadu Buhari/Professor Yemi Osinbajo SAN urging them to vote for the All Progressives Congress presidential candidates.

Osun Lawyers Walk in Support of Buhari/Osinbajo

OSHOGBO-LEGAL practitioners in Osun State under the aegis of Lawyers for Change, yesterday in Oshogbo staged a solidarity walk to drum support for the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress APC, Major General Muhammadu Buhari and his running mate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

The lawyers, donning T-shirts with inscription of "Lawyers for Change" numbering over 100 marched through major streets in the state capital, distributing pamphlets and other souvenirs to create awareness and seek support of the electorate ahead of the February 14 presidential poll for the APC.

Poll shift: 'I was disgusted' -Osinbajo

On poll shift, the APC presidential running mate said: "my personal reaction was one of disgust. I was disgusted that government chose to be so devious." He wondered how the armed forces can contain B‎oko Haram if it couldn't provide security for just two days scheduled for the poll.
He explained that "all former Heads of States agreed: if the insurgency is happening in 14 LGAs, surely the elections can go on?" "It's ironic that in many countries where insurgencies happen, & elections go on, Nigerian troops keep the peace there," he said.
He added that despite the insurgency, "PVC collection in Adamawa aand Yobe, where there is insurgency, is over 70%." ‎"We're becoming accustomed to the impunity of this government. And I think it's so sad that they would go against the wishes of the people," Osinbajo lamented.

Lawyers endorse Buhari/Osinbajo

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikorodu branch has endorsed the All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential candidate Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and his running mate Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN).
In a statement by its chairman Mr. Dotun Adetunji and Secretary Blessing Ene the lawyers’ body said by virtue of their training and professional calling, lawyers are better equipped to advance the course of societies.
They urged lawyers support Prof. Osinbajo who is a senior and leading member of the Bar.
The statement reads: “In the words of the first Nigerian lawyer, Christopher Alexander Sapara-Williams (called to the English Bar in 1879 and the Nigerian Bar in 1898), ‘The legal practitioner lives for the direction of his country’.
“Similarly, Article 14 of the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers adopted in Havana in 1990 loudly and unmistakably proclaims that ‘… Lawyers, in protecting the rights of their clients and in promoting the cause of justice, shall seek to uphold human rights and fundamental freedoms recognised by national and international law and shall at all times act freely and diligently in accordance with the law and recognised standards and ethics of the legal profession.
’”It is against this background that the NBA Ikorodu Branch deemed it pertinent to unanimously endorse, and has unanimously endorsed, the candidature of General Muhammadu Buhari and professor Yemi Oluleke Osinbajo (SAN) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming presidential elections fixed for February 14, 2015.

The Economist endorses Buhari

Influential United Kingdom-based magazine, The Economist, says the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), is more competent than President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party.The highly respected magazine in its editorial published in its current edition and titled, ‘Former dictator is a better choice than a failed president,’ said Nigeria was unfortunate to have both Buhari and Jonathan vying for the Presidency. It, however, said that out of the two, Buhari was a better candidate.This, the magazine argued, was because Jonathan was a huge failure and his party had mismanaged the economy of the country since it took over in 1999.

Think about it

It is not youthfulness or the number of academic certificates that can give good governance. No amount of coercion can force any voter to go one way or another. Lawyers in their Hundreds took to the streets Wednesday in Lagos to drum support for the Muhammadu Buhari and Pro. Yemi Osinbajo presidential ticket under the platform of the All Progrssives Congress (APC). The lawyers who tagged their outing a “‘Walk for Change” said this is necessary to create awareness on why Nigerians must support change of government through the forthcoming general elections. According to the National Coordinator of the group, Mr. Adesina Ogunlana the lawyers under the aegis of Lawyers4Change who walked through some major streets in Ikeja also campaigned for a change of government at the federal level at the February 14 elections.

Osinbajo, Aturu bag integrity award

The Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja branch will on Thursday honour the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo(SAN), as the recipient of its second edition of Gani Fawehinmi Integrity Award.
Also to be honoured with the same award post-humously is the late human rights lawyer, Bamidele Aturu.
The two men, according to the NBA, were chosen “after a vigorous and painstaking search” as men who exemplified Fawehinmi’s guiding principles while alive.
Fawehinmi, a rights lawyer, died on September 5, 2009.

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, declared today, February 5, 2015, that no one should vote for President Goodluck Jonathan and his administration in the February 14 general election, saying that there has been a total failure under the President’s leadership.
Addressing students, Wole Soyinka said he has 60 reasons not to vote for the Jonathan regime.“I will not vote and I will not encourage anyone to vote for the continuation of this government, simply because your colleagues numbering over two hundred were kidnapped”, Soyinka told students at the 2015 edition of Vision of the Child (VOTC), a yearly programme inaugurated in 2012...“And the government of this nation failed to show leadership. So anyone who says after that event that I will vote or cast my vote or encourage anyone to vote for this regime must be living in Sambisa forest,” Soyinka said, referring to a forest in Borno State where the Chibok girls are believed to be held by Boko Haram.“There has been a failure of leadership. Our children whom you represent today have been betrayed ,” Soyinka said, adding that no appropriate action was taken to rescue them.
Soyinka said it took the Jonathan government ten days to even accept that the Chibok girls were missing.“After that dereliction of duty, after that failure of leadership, after that betrayal for our future, for anyone to think or to put words in my mouth suggesting that I will vote or encourage anyone to vote for this regime is a travesty of intelligence,” Soyinka said.

The Osinbajo I Know

Since the emergence of Yemi Osinbajo as the vice presidential candidate of the All Peoples Congress (APC) there has been a lot of speculation about him in the media, social media and chat rooms. Nigerians have been so jaded with politicians that when they come across someone who genuinely cares they remain skeptical.
Yemi Osinbajo was brought up in a strict Christian home where moral values were emphasised with no fear or favour. Stealing was corruption and you never got away with it. As an effect of this upbringing, Yemi excelled as a student. He won contests in debating while in secondary school one of which was the African Statesman Intercollegiate Best Speaker’s Prize. At the University of Lagos where he graduated with a second-class upper degree in law, he tutored 3rd year students in Evidence. This he began while still in his second year. Evidence then was open to both second and third year students.
Osinbajo has a brilliant mind and has used it to further the rule of law beyond the shores of Nigeria. When Justice Bola Ajibola was head of the law school at UNILAG, Yemi was a lecturer in the faculty. He always voiced his opinion on issues even when
it went against the grain; this he did to the consternation of members of the faculty. But to the surprise of many, when Prince Ajibola was appointed as member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, he sent for Yemi
Osinbajo, the lawyer who went the extra mile and made valuable contributions to the law department. Obviously Justice Ajibola did not want a yes man.
When Senator Bola Tinubu became governor of Lagos state, based on reference, he asked Yemi to be his attorney general. Yemi demurred on the grounds of being from Remo. But, Tinubu insisted saying that would not be an issue considering
that Yemi had been a resident in Lagos for over 10 years. This is not a stand alone case as Tinubu also appointed Mr. Ben Akabueze to serve as commissioner.
Many seem to have forgotten that before this role, Yemi was a special adviser to the Nigeria’s attorney general between 1988 and 1992 and went on to become the ethics adviser to the board of the African Development Bank.
The rest as they say is history. Yemi reformed the judiciary. At the time he was appointed, most Lagos courts did not have functioning fax machines, stenographic equipment or
even computers. Paint was peeling off the walls of the esteemed judiciary.
There were no air conditioning, suits could be filed with a paltry 500 Naira and judges earned 67,000 Naira annually! It was pathetic. That was the sorry state of the judiciary in Lagos. The judiciary was reformed and renovated under
Yemi’s leadership. As part of the reform, lawyers now intending to be judges go through examinations. Little wonder he served two scandal-free terms. This should have been a major story in the news but Yemi is not one to score cheap goals by motivating such stories, with a role where service was required.
The Justice Research Institute (JRI) of which Maryam Uwais, the principal partner of Wali-Uwais & Co and consultant to UNICEF, OSIWA, World Bank and DFID and Femi Falana the former president of the West Africa Bar Association and civil rights activist, are board members was co-founded by Yemi in 2005.
The JRI, which boasts of a library and retreat facilities is a justice policy and research centre located in Lagos. It is affiliated to the Faculty of Law,
University of Lagos, Akoka. He established it as a private-public sector think-tank and educational resource for the operators of the justice system. It has become the most reliable source of data and critical information on the justice sector in Nigeria.
In his assignment as a pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Yemi has used the gospel to help the poor and the downtrodden. Much is said about his parish at Banana Island (Olive Tree) but most people may wish to know that he was Pastor of RCCG Jesus House at Ademola street in Ikoyi for years before he was posted to Olive
Tree. At Jesus Centre, the church birthed six NGOs one of which was used to effect kidney transplant for the underprivileged. A lot of these transplants were done locally at St. Nicholas in Lagos not India.
We need people at the helm of affairs who understand the plight of the common man. Yemi, who visits area boys under the bridge, has a mission to Makoko and has sponsored the education of many less privileged children, knows that first
hand.
Just like a battered woman is wary of every well-meaning suitor, Nigerians have become so inured to compromising politicians. As such, it is difficult for them to conceive that there could be a genuine one out there.

Lawyers walk for Buhari, Osinbajo

Hundreds of lawyers staged a “Walk for Change” campaign
yesterday in support of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and his runningmate Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
Led by the National Coordinator of the Lawyers4Change, Adesina Ogunlana, the lawyers walked through some major streets in Ikeja, campaigning for a change of government at the Federal level at the February 14 elections.
The walk took off from the Bar Centre of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja, through Oba Akinjobi Way, Oba Akran Road, Obafemi Awolowo Way, Allen Avenue, Toyin Street, Olowu Street and back to the centre.
Addressing the crowd at the Obafemi Awolowo junction and Alade Market, Ogunlana urged the people to vote for a change of government during the general elections.
He said Buhari and Prof. Osinbajo would bring integrity into the country’s governance.
According to him, the combination of Buhari and Osinbajo
represented honour, integrity, hardwork and the rule of law.
Describing them as system-builders, Ogunlana urged the people to support the ticket, which he insisted represented a change from the present bad government.
He urged the people to ensure that they collect their Permanent
Voter Cards (PVCs) so as not to be disenfranchised.
The National Coordinator, Voters Awareness Initiative, Wale
Ogunade, who campaigned to the Hausa community at the Alade Market, urged them to vote for the APC presidential ticket.
Ogunade assured the market men and women that a government of Buhari and Osinbajo would provide the enabling environment for their businesses to prosper and develop.

'Buhari not too old to Rule' - Dele Momodu

Respected journalist and publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu has declared that presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Gen Muhammadu Buhari is not too old to rule Nigeria.
Momodu, a former presidential candidate on the platform of the Labour Party in 2011 said those who insist Buhari cannot rule Nigeria at 70 should go and kiss the dust.

The jailing of Tunde Thompson, a journalist, during Buhari’s military regime, is one of the points Momodu, Osuntokun and their co-travellers bandy around to remind us of the tyranny of Buhari. But here is what Tunde Thompson himself has to say on Buhari candidature in 2015:
“I believe that a person like Buhari at this time can call anybody to order and some people are afraid of that…Professor Yinka Akintoye, one of the second republic senators jailed by Buhari in 1984, in an article written in December 2014, titled “Open Letter to General Buhari”, after acknowledging the errors made by the General during his brief regime – and everyone knows there were errors,
which regime is without one? – concluded by asserting that he knew he had the General has what it takes to save Nigeria at this point in time.
Lawal Ojuolape was one of the young men that were killed by the Buhari regime for drug trafficking. Lawal Ojuolape’s son ( @ ismaillawal on twitter) has come out to endorse Buhari candidacy…
And here are Momodu and Osuntokun crying louder than the bereaved.
Yes, there were errors during Buhari’s regime but it is
uncharitable to dismiss the patriotic gains of the era. One million Momodus and Osuntokuns cannot stop a change whose time has come.

A Tale of Two Campaigns

One is the campaign of the APC for change with Buhari as the beacon holder and hope bearer, and the other is a campaign on Buhari by the PDP, yes, Buhari is all they talk about whilst Buhari's CHANGE train surges ahead with issues predicated on the APC manifesto, and a strong passion for National Security and anti-corruption.
For the PDP it is Buhari's certificate, whereas INEC and the Military have proved naysayers wrong, INEC has denied
making it an issue, and the Army has silenced cynics, BUT PDP will continue to lie and seek to deceive.
For want of what to campaign with Buhari's health (they lied that he has prostrate cancer), age (they lied that he is 81
not 72), certificate (they lie and insult the Army and all Nigerians when they say that a Retired General of the Nigerian Armed Forces does not have a certificate), and childishly Mr President says the Buhari that he gave the 2nd
highest National Honours last year 'does not know his phone number'.
So for lack of what to debate with, so Buhari and his family have become the PDP Agenda and manifesto.
